The Breast of Broadway
A Benefit for the Fight
Against Breast Cancer
|
Since its inception, I've produced the WW&S concerts with a handful of
dedicated, caring friends. Over the last three years, Eileen Grady,
has gone from "organizer-of-every-tiny-detail", to director and
producer, while maintaining her queen of detail status.
Eileen's idea for "The Breast of Broadway" came at the perfect time for
WW&S. I had just finished playing Eliza Doolittle in "My Fair Lady",
and made fast friends with the fabulous cast. Most of them volunteered
immediately when I requested their time and talent for a broadway
review in support of breast cancer.
We had a cast, and Eileen took the
reigns and ran.
She and college buddy, Emily Navarre, spent countless hours listening
to show tunes, piecing together the line up, and organizing rehearsals.
The goal was to provide awareness to breast cancer through laughter
and song. Not an easy feat. But they have achieved it.
Each year has gotten better and better.
I'm thankful to all the people who have given of themselves for this
cause, especially Eileen Grady, Emily Navarre, and our art director for
the last 8 years, Austin Wondolowski, for joining me in Wine, Women& Song.
Keep coming back to this site for information about upcoming shows and
how you can volunteer at one of our events.
Thank you. Susan Z

About:
Wine, Women & Song (WW&S) is a series of benefit
concerts produced by me, Susan Z, to raise money for breast
cancer education and direct patient services. Concerts are
held every few months with the help of volunteer musicians,
staff, and local clubs providing a place to play. Proceeds will go to the local breast cancer funds including Zero Breast Cancer and To Celebrate Life.
History:
I came up with the idea after playing a concert at a winery in Sonoma County. My mother was undergoing chemotherapy for breast cancer at the time, and I had lost my stepmother only a few months before to brain cancer. I produced the first event in April of 1998. I've lost track of how many shows we've done, but I've been doing them for 10 years now, with help from my dedicated volunteers and friends, especially Eileen Grady, Emily Navarre and Austin Wondolowski.
Since
the First Concert:
WW&S has raised over $80,000.00 for breast
cancer education and direct patient services since the first show in
September '98. We've produced two compilation CDs with the help of
Jodi Alperstein, Austin Wondolowski, Eileen Grady Emily Navarre, and
Ualtar O'Regan. The live shows have gone from one nighters in small
cafes and bars, to theatrical events and even a weekend long festival!
This has all been volunteerism at it's finest. No one has gotten any monetary reward for their time and generosity.
We do this because we love what we do!

you are chosen to perform I will contact you. I'm

be able to respond to people who are not chosen.
Volunteers:
Volunteers are angels. There isn't that much to do, so don't
recoil at the thought. I need help at the gigs with things
like: the raffle, a door person, someone to time the acts
to keep things moving smoothly, speakers to talk about their
experience with cancer, hanging flyers or posters, and whatever
arises. If you think you want to be a part of this expanding
organization, for one night or many, email me:

Thursday, June 6
The Sweetwater

Mill Valley 9:00 PM
musicians:
- Susan Z
- Liz Pisco
- Melaine Stickland Band
- Christene LeDoux
It
was worth the wait for this fabulous event that raised over
$1,500.00. Christene
Ledoux opened the show with a solo performance of tender
folk tunes, followed by Susan Z and her "acoustic" band.
Then Liz
Pisco and her band rocked the house. New comer Melanie
Strickland ended the gig with her group, and the audience
was there until the last note was sung. Thank you
again to all the volunteers for making this happen, and
especially the Sweetwater for giving us a chance to play
there and raise money for a great cause! See you in
September for A Weekend of Wine & Roses. |

More than a year has passed since the beginning of WW&S,
and we are still going strong thanks to the continued support
of local clubs and the following musicians who performed at

Vieira. This was the first night of our silent auction,
and we are pleased to say that our total funds raised to date
is over $11,000.00! Special thanks to an anonymous donor
who gave $1,000.00 towards the WW&S compilation cd. |

WW&S has been able to raise upwards of $6,500.00

#6
Hotel Utah
I'm going to get a bit sentimental here...this was a historic
evening. Not only did we have the 1999 Lilith Fair Acoustic
Talent Search winner, Shelley Doty, along with the extremely
talented Baby Snufkin, Heather Combs, John Vecchiarelli and
Donna Jean Castro, but this was also the last night we were
blessed with the presence of Howard Fargo, my dearest friend.
He volunteered at every one of the WW&S shows, usually
taking $ at the door, and most recently, recording the music.
He loved each and every one of the musicians that performed
this night, and talked about it all the way home. Thanks to
all who attended and gave so generously. |

The Sweetwater
The newly remodeled, reopened, Sweetwater in Mill Valley,
was the home to our
most successful event, (as of April 17th), raising over $2,000.00.
Andrew
Kerr and Caren Armstrong opened the show with laughs, sing-alongs,
and an
incredible response from the audience. Cherry/Universal
Recording Artists,
Stroke9, ended the evening with a bang, and many new fans.
